Rating: - Smooth Install and operation
I'm constantly trying to figure out why other people have problems with this software or software in general. I've been using NAV for about 5 years and have never had any problems (under 95/98/XP). Last year, I installed the Norton Firewall on top of it and didn't have any installation issues. All I had to do was make sure XP wasn't running its firewall and no other programs were running in the background. I don't like using Microsoft's Firewall (XP), because it just adds another potential problem especially if you use a third party software. I read the manual a couple times as well (something many people just don't take the time to do). You just can't expect the throw a CD in the drive and expect the installaion to go smooth every time. I actually found this version easier to configure with MS Outlook 2002 and Express than version 2002. The previous version took a little more time, because you had to manually configure it to work with your email programs (especially if you were using something uncommon). This new version actually scans your system for any email programs so it can protect you from incoming viruses. This version scans my incoming/outgoing outlook and hotmail traffic. I also have the Firewall software from the same company. Additionally, you can't automatically assume you'll encounter the same problems as others, because everyone's machine is configured differently. The one negative thing is their support. It can be costly if you're have serious problems. Their PriorityCare 800 Support should be free for at least 30 days and charge you per-incident. Their knowledgebase is not extensive if you want to research a specific problem for yourself. They almost force you to call them. Even then--they would probably have you uninstall it and reinstall it. I don't need to pay someone for that kind of support.
Rating: - Best Anti-Virus software available
I have been using Peter Norton's software since early DOS days, so I can say without a doubt that it is superior software. I have put it through the paces of DOS 3.0 through Windows XP. From Norton Utilities to AntiVirus, my trust has never faltered. I am happy to pay for subscription updates, as they are more than worth their price to keep my system running smoothly and virus-free. Their latest NAV 2003 simply proves Symantec continues to set the standard for anti-virus protection. When large fortune 100 companies are using the Corporate Edition of Norton AntiVirus, you can definitely feel safe, knowing you will win the battle against viruses, running this at home. I rather believe that all these individuals having so many issues after installing Norton AntiVirus - maybe there is something very wrong with your system that AntiVirus software cannot solve. If you can't get NAV up and running, you may want to have those guys at BestBuy take a look at your computer. Bottom line, with rebates it's an even better deal.
Rating: - Good at fixing viruii but the update software is buggy
I use windows XP(upgrade from 98), and installed the program, registered it. A very easy install; however, the live update software doesn't work on my puter. Norton has a wonderful extensive online knowledge-base to help you debug this problem, but none of their solutions worked for me. I found their free email help service is worthless, as I sent them my problem and what solutions I tried and they just sent me back my solution to me as the way to solve the problem without much explaination. As a software engineer I find this to be ridiculous and unacceptable behavior for a company who is supposed to support my platform. So I give it 3 stars, mostly because it DOES virus scanning. It loses points because I lack the security of knowing my virus definitions will be up to date automatically, or through their manual live update (clicking a button in their GUI). Alternatively, there is way to manually update definitions, which is available from their website.
